Suryakumar Yadav was released by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and Mumbai Indians included him in their squad. Since then, Suryakumar with his splendid performance has become an irreplaceable part of MI’s batting unit.
In 2018, Suryakumar scored 512 runs for Mumbai Indians and he carried on this performance in 2019 and 2020 too by scoring 424 runs and 480 runs respectively.
In the current IPL 2021, he has scored 181 runs till now which is not that great but he still remains a vital part of Mumbai Indians.
KKR’s former batsman and captain, Gautam Gambhir also supports this.
Speaking to Star Sports on Thursday, Gautam said that releasing Suryakumar was KKR’s worst decision. He also said that he also made a mistake by not letting him play at number 3 when he was KKR’s skipper.
“My only regret was that we couldn’t push him at No.3. We always wanted him to bat at No.3 because we had Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan. So, we had to use him as a finisher. From KKR’s point of view, this has to be their biggest loss. Because someone you groom for four years and then you let him go. And now, he is at peak of his career,” said Gambhir.
Gambhir also stated that he didn’t score too many runs when he was a part of KKR because he was not utilized in the right manner.
“Because we couldn’t give him that position, he couldn’t get those 400, 500 or 600 runs in a season. Someone’s loss could be someone’s massive gain. That’s exactly what has happened with Mumbai Indians. KKR let go of him and now he has become a mainstay of MI’s batting line-up,” he further added.
Suryakumar Yadav started his IPL career in 2012 with Mumbai Indians but he was then taken by KKR. He played 54 matches for KKR for the next 4 years and was again bought by MI in 2018.
He also made his debut for the Indian team this year and is also a part of the Indian squad for the T20 world cup 2021.
